So you want to start a business! Woot! *insert confetti here*
Thinking about starting a business is exhilarating, exciting, scary, hopeful, awesome, risky and so many other things! (This pretty much describes getting married too :P) Working from home and defining your own schedule and doing what you LOVE and helping people AND making the big bucks $$$$$ – what could be better?!
So how do you start? Well the first step is to define your ‘why’.
Why do you want to own this business?
Why
What purpose are you trying to fulfill? What problem are you trying to solve? What is the deeper meaning behind this business?
Even though I LOVE planning (see Exhibit A – ‘Basic Bash Events’) I would have LOVED to have someone help out on all the research, decision making, decorating, and making everything happen but I didn’t. Planning takes a lot of time and effort and commitment and if I could do it over, I would want a planner that I could trust to carry out my vision and that would go as in depth and thorough into planning and research, etc that I did.
Now that I’m on the other side (as a planner and not a bride) it is easier for me as an outside person to take on some of the planning tasks. Basic Bash takes the days that are supposed to be great and actually makes them great. BBE creates beautiful moments that you will remember forever!
Do You
What about you makes you a good fit for entering the industry as an independent entity? Why are you creating a new product for others instead of using what was already there? Can’t you get a similar service from someone else?
I had never dreamed of being a wedding planner in my life until after I planned my own wedding. Not even during it, but after. When the wedding was over and all was said and done, I did not even know what to do with myself. I missed planning!
I learned so much from my own wedding. I loved making song lists and choosing the flowers in the bouquets and researching all the vendors so much that I want to do it over and over again for other people. I know what it’s like to try to handle every single detail but on the day of, no one is going to let you do anything except have a good time! Everything that went wrong that day, I noticed but I couldn’t do anything about it.
Want To Own
You could probably find some job that offers something similar to what you want to do. In addition it probably offers stability including a steady paycheck, benefits, and PTO. When you own a business, you’re on your own! As U2 says, “You don’t have to go it alone”. Why do you want to?
I believe that Basic Bash Events has something special and unique to offer because we provide not only wedding day services but a unique experience throughout. We can’t live up to the full potential of this idea if we are working for another planner.
We are for everyone and we’re here to help you make the most of your time and your wedding day by expressing yourselves and your unique relationship in the best way. We want you to remember and embrace the special once-in-a-lifetime moments stress-free.
This Business
If you want to start a business to help people, well there are unlimited options for you! You could be a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher – you definitely don’t have to own a business to help people and you certainly don’t have to stay within any one industry to make a positive impact.
You have a choice to take all of the elements of ‘why you want to start a business’ and make a decision. Why do you want to start THIS business? Everyone has interests and hobbies but what makes this more than that? What makes it a passion?
Starting your own business takes courage and passion and resiliency in the face of uncertainty and potential failure. When you’re up past midnight blogging or editing or planning, will these reasons be enough to keep you motivated, focused, and determined?
If so, you’re one step closer to starting your own business!
