Happy Friday! We want to start the weekend off right by showing off our first BBE couple of the 2016 wedding season, Sydney and Tom! From our very first coffee date, we knew there was something special about these #hotdoctors – there’s still time for you to use that as your wedding hashtag 😉 – and we were right!!
It hit us right in the feels to see such a driven and fun-loving couple who care not only about each other, but others around them too. We have to admit, we teared up a little bit at their responses to the questions below (so you might want to grab a tissue!). We feel so incredibly blessed to be working with them on creating their big day, which is right around the corner!
How did you meet?
“Tom’s mustache is sooooo gross”- Future Mrs. Blount.
Tom was rocking a majestic (awful) ‘stache in November 2012 and overheard this quote as he passed by Sydney and her friends between lectures, leading to one of the couple’s first interactions. This awkwardness became the foundation for what would become an amazing relationship. Together they have enjoyed a countless number of concerts, new restaurants, outdoor activities, walks with Clarence, smiles, laughs, and moments. To capture and reminisce on these memories, each month on their “monthiversary” Sydney made Tom a card the featured photos from the month and a representative quote.
How did he propose?
Both parties knew early on that this was not just a short-term deal, they balance each other out in so many ways. It became, in their eyes, a matter of “when” rather than “if” they would get married. Tom reassured Sydney he would propose within 10 years, so she put her Pinterest board on hold. Little did Sydney know, Tom had a plan (side note- very out of character for Tom to think ahead). On Saturday, August 1, 2015 after taking Clarence on a long walk, Sydney came back to what she thought was a 2 year anniversary present that Tom needed time to set up. Little did she know, this gift was actually A PROPROSAL!!!! She was lead up to his roof, removed her blindfold, and was greeted by a beautiful, handcrafted wooden sign featuring all of the quotes from the letters she had written Tom each month. One particular board sat off to the side. Tom asked Sydney to grab it and help him complete her quote board. Sydney assumed he was being lazy and failed to finish the project on time. As she turned over the board she read her favorite quote in the world – “Will you marry me?”- Tom. She turned to find him on one knee. “Are you serious?” is all she could squeak out. Surprisingly, she was too shocked to even check out her new hardware. Sydney’s parents showed up with a bottle of champagne and they all celebrated the best day ever!
Where are you going for your honeymoon? Why did you choose it?
St. Lucia! Beaches, beaches, and more beaches. We area also excited for scuba diving, golfing, hiking, and a lot of relaxing.
What is your favorite vacation you took together?
Beaufort, North Carolina after step 1 of our medical boards. It was our first vacation together and we spent our time at the beach, exploring the amazing seafood restaurants, fishing, and sailing.
What are your favorite shared hobbies?
We consider ourselves foodies, so we love trying new restaurants. We also love walking our dog Clarence, cooking together, and rocking out at concerts.
What is your favorite restaurant and dish at that restaurant?
Sydney: Kitchen Table! My favorite dish is usually whatever their vegetarian option is, although the curried sweet potato jam is always a winner!
Tom: My favorite restaurant is in Denver, it is called Ocean Prime and EVERYTHING is awesome. Especially the Tuna.
Tell us about your pets!
Sydney: I grew up on a farm so I have a lot of pets- horses, dogs, etc. But with me right now, I have my soon to be fur-baby Clarence! He is an English Bulldog who is almost 6 but acts like he is still a pup.
Tom: My partner in crime is Clarence, a 6 year old bulldog. He is super energetic and lovable, though he is quite dumb and failed puppy school back in his younger days.
What song is your all-time favorite jam?
Sydney: It’s not necessarily a “jam” but Carolina by Eric Church is my favorite song. Favorite all-time jam with Tom is “F*ckin Problems ” by A$AP Rocky, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar, not exactly wedding song appropriate!
Tom: Thunder Road, by Bruce Springsteen
Tell us something that makes you proud about your future spouse!
Sydney: My proudest moment is definitely when Tom donated bone marrow to Ashley, an 11 year old girl with cancer who is now in remission. His donation is a true showing of his selflessness. It was two weeks before one of the biggest tests in our medical schooling, but that didn’t deter Tom from donating. Meeting Ashley and her lovely family this past December was so touching and meaningful.
Tom: She doesn’t like to brag about herself, but Sydney is INCREDIBLY smart and caring, so I thoroughly enjoyed her induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, which is a group that recognizes the best of the best in medical school when it comes to caring about people.
What was the first thing you noticed about the groom?
His awful mustache!! I knew underneath that fur living on his upper lip was a handsome man. But really, it was his personality – easy going with a great sense of humor. He is already prepped with dad jokes.
What was the first thing you noticed about the bride?
I sat behind her in class for our first two years of Medical School, and I distinctly remember being struck by how carefree and fun she seemed. She has a truly infectious personality that shines through when she smiles.
Tell us something else about your spouse that makes you smile!
Sydney: My funniest memory of Tom is our first date watching Princess Bride at his house. He went to get some water, stepped on my chain-link purse strap, and all 6′ 9″ of him fell to the ground. I couldn’t stop laughing – it really lightened the mood for the date.
Tom: The happiest moment I’ve shared with Sydney was when we opened our letters to figure out where we matched for our Residency. Being among our friends in that environment was truly special, and it was particularly awesome to share that joy with Syd.
