Pinterest is such a wonderful resource for finding creative recipes, crafts, home design inspiration, and wedding ideas! We used Pinterest to plan our own weddings and found it moderately helpful. After all, there is a lot of creativity floating around. For some, Pinterest is a life-saver. It is great for finding dress, guestbook, and cake inspiration but we would not recommend it for finding an overall theme. Here’s why:
1. It’s hard to narrow down ideas.
There are SO many amazing, creative, and unique ideas on Pinterest that it’s easy to pin hundreds of ideas to a wedding board. When we were planning, Pinterest was one of our main resources. We pinned to our hearts’ content. But, when we looked back on our boards, they looked no different than the pages we were searching! Instead of narrowing down the options, Pinterest broadens them. There are just too many cool ideas. Wasn’t this supposed to be the easy part? If you don’t have a concrete theme from the start, it will be difficult to establish one once you start pinning to your wedding board.
2. It sets the bar high.
Many of the photos on Pinterest are styled by professionals and the virtual Pinterest wedding that you want to create just might not be feasible within your budget, location, resources, etc. Many use Pinterest as a way to find ideas for cheap. Pinterest is designed to be used to get inspiration, yes, but if you fall in love with a lush garden theme or a mansion venue, you will be in a bind. Be careful “window shopping” if you can’t fight the temptation to buy!
3. Ideas – Unique or Mainstream, Quirky or Timeless?
Finding a great pin is so satisfying. We loved the ideas of using faces of our bridal party in our programs, providing flip flops to our guests for the dance floor, and using a wedding hashtag but in the end, we ended up using only one of those three ideas. Make sure you take a step back and think about this: Will I still like it in one, five, ten years? Remember, uniqueness shouldn’t be the end goal. Pinterest ideas are unique, but they are not personal. Pinterest is just a website with lots of pretty pictures. Your wedding is your own special memory forever and you get one shot to do it right. Don’t let Pinterest dictate your wedding and turn it into something that does not reflect you, your fiancé, or your relationship as a couple.
